Candles and oils

And so it begins!  Last week I shared with you all about my plunge into the world of essential oils and aromatherapy.  This past weekend I took the opportunity to do a little mixing and playing to see what I could come up with.

One of the first things that I wanted to experiment with was using the oils for therapeutic uses and healing the body.  Foot rubs and massages are pretty common around our house so I thought to myself, why not make a massage oil to help melt the aches and pains away.  I added a little lavender and some vanilla to my carrier oil and tested it out over the past few days with my sweetie to some pretty good reviews.  It smelled wonderful and was quite relaxing for not her but me as well.

I also decided to do a craft project with my kids and make some scented candles too.  We picked up some wax from the craft store, found some candle dyes and set out to make some really cool and smelly candles.  With a little bit of experimentation  we got the colors figures out and set to work on making our candles.  The kids had a blast choosing the colors and scents for their creations and putting it all together to make the final product.  And I have to admit, I had a good time too!  We ended with some light green vanilla candles, a bright red cinnamon one and a darker green vanilla-lime creation.

With each experiment that I do, I am even more thrilled with this choice of exploration and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the oils set that I ordered as well so that I can play even more.

Smells right to me!

I seem to find myself regularly searching for new skills and tools for my life and spiritual practice.  Sometimes these searches lead to dead ends and at other times, I find new ways to live happier, healthier and more productive.  Over the last year or so, I have been sticking my toe in the deep waters of essential oils and aromatherapy.  Not just because it smells good and is fascinating, but because I have been able to experience first hand many benefits of using certain oils to aid my health and spirituality.

I started with just a few specific oils to use for anointing candles in my spell work.  Then I branched out into a few blends for specific purposes.  A headache blend here, an energizing blend there…  I was quickly staring to see and feel the benefits of using these products.

A few days ago, I picked up a book at my local metaphysical shop, The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valarie Worwood.  Holy cow, did this one book blow the doors off of what I was doing.  Part of me bought the book as a general reference so that I could find more uses for the oils that I had.  Another part of me bought it so that I could find the excuse, umm…I mean reason, to buy a collection of oils.

The vast number of recipes and simple concoctions in this book showed me that there is so much more that I can do with a few little bottles of plant extract than I thought.  Got a headache?  Massage a little peppermint and lavender oil around your temples.  Sore throat?  Chamomile, thyme and lemon.  Hate washing the dishes?  Add some bergamot and lemon to your detergent and get a mental and emotional boost when you bust the suds!

I have a host of ideas that I am planning to use these oils for as soon as they arrive.  Massage oils, candle blessings, energetic boosts for the house, and so much more.   Wish me luck and if you don’t hear from me after I receive my package of oils, know that I at least disappeared into a wonderfully smelling bliss!

Do you use essential oils in your daily routine?  What benefits have you experienced?
